Types Of Square Wire and Its Uses

A wire is formed by drawing the metal into a flexible rod. Wires come in different shapes and sizes. Shaped wires can be categorized as round wire, rectangular wire, flat wire, and square wire.  The square wire is a type of shaped wire which represents the shape of a square. It requires a rolling and annealing process to produce a square wire. Square wires are specifically used for making jewelry.

 

Types of Square wires :


  • High carbon steel square wire:  This is a type of square wire which contains carbon in the range of 0.6 percent to 1.0 percent. High carbon steel square wire is vulnerable to heat and as a result, it can be worked into many different forms.
  •  Silver square wire:  This wire is manufactured by the process of annealing which gives it strength and allows it to bend into the desired shape. It is mostly preferred in banding designs.
  • Square green GI PVC coated wire: It is a square wire which is green in color coated with polyvinyl chloride. It is mainly used for industrial, agricultural, and fencing purposes.
  • Plastic square wire: This square wire is made from plastic by the process of rolling. This wire is generally used for fencing.


Grades of materials used in making square wires:


  1. Stainless steel: Stainless steel is used for making square wires. Stainless steel is an iron-based steel alloy that is corrosion resistant. It contains a minimum of 11% chromium. it is not damaged if exposed to high temperatures as it is resistant to heat and fire.
  2. Nickel Alloy: Nickel alloy is also useful in high-temperature environments due to its high strength, toughness, and superior corrosion resistance. Hence, it is used in making square wire. MONEL (1) alloy 400 is a high nickel-copper alloy that has the strength of mild steel and will never corrode when used in industrial applications.
  3. Mild steel: Mild steel is one of the important materials used in making square wires. It contains a small percentage of carbon but is strong and easily worked.
  4. Aluminum: It is the most commonly used material for manufacturing square wires due to its low density and corrosion-resistant properties.
  5. Copper: Although copper has low tensile strength it has favorable corrosion-resistant properties.


Advantages of Square wires:


  1. Accurately rolled or die drawn to tight tolerances: Spring steel wire is available as a square wire which is manufactured by the process of accurate cold rolling done at below recrystallization temperature. It involves strengthening the metal by using mechanical stress to change the shape of the metal and also makes it corrosion resistant.
  2. Increase in the volumetric occupancy ratio: Compared to round wire, the square wire has a 27% higher volumetric occupancy ratio. An increase in the volumetric occupancy ratio refers to the decrease in the self-vibration of the wound coil.
  3. Advantage of skin effect: The tendency for current to flow around the surface of a wire at high frequencies is known as the skin effect. Spring steel wire in the firm of square wire provides a greater advantage of skin effect as compared to round wire.
  4. Burr-free edges: Square wires are manufactured with utmost care and visibility as a result it ensures a smooth surface with fine cut edges.
  5. Continuous coil with fewer welds than traditional strip coil: Square wires are produced using the system of the continuous coil which provides the benefits of durability, affordability, stability, and consistent support.
  6. Greater heat dissipation: Square wire coil has very few gaps, which enables it to disperse heat easily.


Uses and applications of square wire :


  • Square wires are used for making hand-made jewellery as they are easily formed.
  • Rolled square wires can be compressed in size. Therefore, it can be used in making other shapes such as the oval, round, and sometimes flat-rolled.

    Square wires are used in the production of mechanical spring as it ensures greater strength and enables the spring to respond when force is applied or released.
  • A header bar is produced by heating a long square metal is heated and gradually reduced in cross-section by processing it through a series of rolls and then coiled.
  • Square wire mesh is highly used in welded construction, railing infill panels, fan guards, filtration systems, and many other applications.
  • Square wires are also used in making archwires, known as the thickness of the wire. An orthodontist generally uses square wire as it fits into the bracket easily which controls tooth movement.
  • Square wires are particularly suitable for building up the cores of the rotating coil of dynamos or motors.


CONCLUSION


Square wires are made with low alloy, medium carbon steel with a very high yield strength which allows it to maintain its original shape even if it is bent or twisted.

 Hence, it is extensively demanded in industrial and electrical purposes.
