A chamfer bar machine also called a tube and bar end chamfering machine is a machine used for refining the finishes of the workpieces that are machined to attain the perfection of the final products. The work that a chamfer bar machine does can be regarded as one of the secondary procedures of machining since it is used to make the edges of the two adjacent sides smoother by removing the sharp edges with the tools. On the contrary to making the basic sizes or shapes of the workpieces, like a sewing machine that obtains blocks of a chore by cutting them off from the larger pieces, the chamfer bar machine is dedicated to completing the smooth surface finishes after the essential machining works have been done.
In other words, any workpiece that has edges, no matter whether a flat surface or an extended part, can be chamfered depending on the demands of the customers, which allows for the customization of the required geometries. For the workpieces with right angles, the chamfering process need to be performed between the adjacent sides of the angles. Although, when there are workpieces with rounded sides, such as tubes or bars, the chamfering process would be done by the ends of those tubes or bars, resulting in chamfer bars
Thus, the chamfering machine that performs the end chamfering work is called a bar end chamfering machine or a chamfer bar machine. With a chamfer bar machine, all of the sharp edges on the ends of the bars or tubes can be smoothed, which allows them to be used for subsequent applications.
The chamfer bar machine can not only work on the individual bar but also as one of the provided functions in the machining center, which is another feasible method for the secondary machining processes. For the individual chamfer bar machines, there can be single or double-end chamfering machines. The former cuts the edges of the tubes or bars on each side at a time, which takes more time to finish the work compared to the latter.
While the latter cuts into the edges from both sides of the chamfer bar or tubes simultaneously, which produces more chips at a time but lowers the operation time, and thus makes the chamfering processes more useful than the single-end models. Although, some may have issues with how the chamfer bar machines work if there are longer workpieces that are vital to be chamfered. In fact, there are a few double-end chamfer bar machines that are made on a larger scale and are able to accept workpieces with a wide range of lengths, which perfectly deals with this problem.
On the chamfer bar machine, there is an automatic bundle loader that helps in holding the tubes or bars that are supposed to be chamfered, with an automatic magazine that loads tubes or bars one at a time, and one after another. The automatic magazine also allows the workpiece to be chamfered and the remnants to be ejected. On the rear part of the magazine, there are one or two sides of cutting tools that are used to perform the chamfering works. As the process of chamfering functions on the machining center, the cutting tools that are specialized in the chamfering works are mounted on the power turret, which allows for automatic changing of the tools.
Alongside the tool-changing process, the cutting speed and spindle speed are all automatically controlled by the computer, since the machining center is usually connected to the CNC system, which assists in the design of the products and the control of the works. As for the sizes and shapes of the workpieces that are available to be chamfered on the machining center, the workpieces with shorter sizes would be clamped on the headstock to be ready for the chamfering works, while the longer workpieces would require the tailstock to support the other end. This is done to ensure the accuracy of the work and prevent the deformation of the products.
